Traditional practices you can bring into your everyday routine, explained simply.
In the Vedic tradition, a remedy, or upaya, is a way of working with planetary energy rather than against it. Remedies are not about fear or quick fixes. They are gentle, consistent practices that help you stay balanced, aware and supported as you move through different phases of life.
Three kinds of support
It is helpful to think of traditional remedies in three broad groups:
- Astrological gemstones, which are worn to strengthen a specific planet in your birth chart.
- Crystals, which are used to support an intention, a mood or the atmosphere of a space.
- Everyday practices, such as mantra, prayer, charity and simple rituals, which anyone can begin with.
The nine planetary gemstones
The Navaratna, or nine gems, are traditionally linked with the nine planets of Vedic astrology:
- Sun: Ruby (Manik)
- Moon: Pearl (Moti)
- Mars: Red Coral (Moonga)
- Mercury: Emerald (Panna)
- Jupiter: Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj)
- Venus: Diamond (Heera)
- Saturn: Blue Sapphire (Neelam)
- Rahu: Hessonite (Gomed)
- Ketu: Cat's Eye (Lehsunia)
Because each gemstone strengthens its planet, the choice must come from your chart. Traditionally, the metal, the finger, the day and the time for first wearing a gemstone are also chosen with care. Pukhraj, for example, is often worn in gold on the index finger, starting on a Thursday. Some stones, especially Neelam, are considered powerful enough that a trial period is traditionally advised before wearing them permanently. These details should always follow personal guidance rather than a general rule.
Crystals in daily life
Crystals are softer companions. You might keep Amethyst by your bed as part of a calming evening routine, place Black Tourmaline near your front door, or hold a Rose Quartz during a few minutes of quiet reflection. Their value lies in intention and consistency: a small daily moment of attention.
Simple practices you can begin with
Many traditional remedies need nothing more than a little time each day:
- Mantra: chanting or listening to a mantra associated with a planet, or a simple prayer, for a few minutes each morning.
- Lighting a diya: a small lamp lit in the evening is one of the most loved household rituals for bringing warmth and focus into the home.
- Charity (daan): giving thoughtfully, especially on the day associated with a planet, is considered one of the most meaningful remedies of all.
- Meditation and breath: a few minutes of stillness helps you notice patterns instead of reacting to them.
- Keeping your space clear: a clean, uncluttered home and workspace supports a clearer mind.
The best remedy is one you can keep up. A small practice done sincerely every day is worth more than an elaborate ritual done once.
A note on balance
Traditional remedies are meant to support your life, not replace practical action or professional advice. They do not replace medical, financial or legal guidance, and we would never suggest otherwise. Used with understanding, they can help you approach challenges with more calm, clarity and confidence.
Where to begin
If you are drawn to remedies but unsure where to start, begin with a simple daily practice from the list above. If you are considering a gemstone, start with your birth chart. Our consultations always follow the same order: person first, then chart, then planet, then remedy.
